My name is Sam. I am a drummer, producer, and educator currently based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
I hail from Mokena, IL, a quiet suburb south of Chicago. My musical journey began when I discovered drums in the 7th grade. My earliest musical interests largely aligned with those of the stereotypical suburban teenage drummer: being obsessed with Mike Portnoy, thinking that every jazz standard requires a funk section, and believing that using odd time signatures is emblematic of superior intellect.
Despite these not-so-hot takes, my high school years would ignite my passion for music. I owe a lot to my teachers during this time. Knowing that not all of their students would be career musicians, their instruction focused on getting students excited to play music, and reminding them that playing music is meant to be an extension of our emotional faculties; that playing music is its own reward. This sentiment, while perhaps not fully realized at the time, would come to govern my musical philosophy and shape me as an individual.
After high school, I continued my musical studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. There, my interests were molded by the myriad musical opportunities afforded by the UIUC School of Music. From Balinese Gamelan to Brazilian folkloric music, I was introduced to new sounds and new schools of thought about music and art. It was also during this time that my interest in recording and music production would take root.
During my time at UIUC, I played in numerous bands, most notable among them was the original 3 piece metal project Media Light Array. After releasing our premiere DEMO in October of 2019, we embarked on a DIY full length album which would become Being is Bereaving, released in March of 2020. In August of 2021 we released a cover of “Castration Rite” by the grind-GOAT Discordance Axis. Our second and final full length album was Ordeal At Embellishland released on Christmas day 2021. Media Light Array would disband after this release.
My personal project, Arcanum Sequitur, is the sonic product of the sounds and musics I have found to be most formative. I released Wherewithal EP in October of 2020, and later Isms - my first full length release in June of 2024.
After 7 years of living in Urbana, IL my musical pursuits took me to Los Angeles, California where I am was immersed in many of the Latin and world musics that the city boasts. In addition to gigging across the city, I spent a great deal of time circulating at the California Institute of The Arts where I had the privilege to play and study with many ensembles including the CalArts Latin Caribbean Collective, Brazilian Jazz ensemble and more.
In the summer of 2024, I moved to Milwaukee, WI where I am currently focusing on new musical projects and developing my private lessons studio.
